Could The Vampire Diaries Go on Without Nina, Ian or Paul? Boss Julie Plec Weighs In

“Just the thought of it actually hurts me a little.”

This is what The Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec has to say about the idea of a seventh season without any of her main cast members.

Us, too, Julie. Us too!

As E! News previously reported, only two of the show’s three leads—Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley—has signed on for a seventh season, which would kick off next fall, if the CW decides to pick up the series. Season six is currently airing—and kicking some serious creative ass—on Thursdays. (A new episode airs tonight.)

TVD’s ratings have been holding steady, averaging about 2 million viewers (last week’s episode was its largest audience since March), but the decision of a seventh season likely won’t be made until early 2015.

So what are the chances that season seven will happen? And would TVD’s producers and the CW really consider continuing the show without any of the main trio—Nina, Ian or Paul? If one of them decides not to continue?
I sat down with Julie to try to get some answers. See what the TVD mastermind has to say in the exclusive video right here….

‘Mother’s Day’ Adds Paul Wesley

Paul Wesley has joined Paul Duddridge’s feature Mother’s Day, which stars Susan Sarandon, Sharon Stone and Sarandon’s daughter Eva Amurri Martino. Wesley will play Kevin, an artsy pastry-chef and boyfriend of Amurri Martino’s character. Wesley’s credits include the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, IFC’s upcoming Before I Disappear and Drafthouse Films’ Sam & Amira. He is repped by ICM Partners, manager Susan Calogerakis and Jackoway Tyerman.

Could The Vampire Diaries Be Ending? Or Go on Without Nina, Ian or Paul?

The Vampire Diaries’ days may be numbered—if one of the show’s main stars doesn’t come around.

The core TVD trio—Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley—have been in talks with the studio, and so far, only two of the three actors have signed on for a seventh season, E! News has learned. The remaining star (either Nina, Ian or Paul) is unsure whether he or she wants to continue, according to multiple inside sources familiar with the talks. (Warner Bros. does not comment on contract negotiations.)

The Vampire Diaries, which launches its sixth season Oct. 2,  has been a hugely successful series for the CW, giving the fledgling network in 2009 its highest-rated premiere ever (5.7 million viewers). Season five averaged more than 2 million viewers, which is still pretty strong by CW standards.

If all three main actors (Nina, Ian and Paul) were to sign on for a season seven, the show would have a good shot at a seventh season pickup. We also hear it’s possible that the network would consider continuing the show without all three stars, shifting the focus to some of the other beloved characters.
